Duties:
The Vice President (VP) of Finance reports to the Executive Director. The ideal candidate will have significant experience supervising financial operations in the nonprofit sector and will have finance/accounting experience in the human and social services field.  The VP of Finance will have overall managerial responsibility for YRI’s accounting and budgeting and will support operations and programs.  The VP of Finance will have primary responsibility for all contractual matters. They will serve as part of the Executive Management Team.  Candidates must have proven experience managing the financial and accounting departments for a similar nonprofit or State agency. The VP of Finance will carry out all executive duties and responsibilities listed in detail below. 

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the rest of senior executive leadership team and Board of Directors. 

  • Assess and evaluate financial performance of the organization with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts. 

  • Provide strategic financial insights to ensure YRI’s continued growth and success. 

  • Create and establish yearly financial objectives that align with the organization’s plan for growth and expansion. 

  • Ensure the successful and timely completion of annual proposals and contract amendments, as needed. 

  • Select and engage consultants, auditors and investors. 

  • Recruit, interview, and hire finance staff as needed. 

  • Supervise the Controller and Administrative Support Specialist to Finance and engage accounting and finance contractors as needed. 

  • Prepare and present monthly financial budgeting reports including year-to-date spending. 

  • Develop and maintain annual organizational operating budget. 

  • Supervise creation of reports, software implementation and identify the best tools for budgeting and forecasting. 

  • Review and ensure application of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures. 

  • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting data for funders. 

  • Oversee the preparation and communication of financial statements and budgets and the preparation and timely filing of all local, state and federal tax returns 

  • Work with Human Resources to ensure appropriate legal compliance. 

  • Serve as a key point of contact for contract partners and external auditors; Manage preparation and support of all contracts and external audits. 

  • Supervise processing of charitable donations and grants. 

  • Manage cash flow planning process and ensure funds availability. 

  • Maintain outstanding banking relationships and strategic alliances with vendors and business partners. 

  • Engage finance committee and/or board of directors to develop short term and long-term plans, projections and budgets. 

  • Remain current on audit best practices as well as state, federal and local laws relevant to YRI’s operations. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in Finance, Accounting, Business, or similar discipline. 

  • Five to seven years of senior management experience in organizations with operations in excess of $10 million per year and over 50 employees.  

  • Managerial experience with non-profit social service and/or health care agency providing services under contract with the State of New York.  

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills. 

  • A demonstrated ability to effectively lead teams and collaborate at every level of an organization and with external stakeholders. 

  • The ability to synthesize complex financial information to non-finance staff and YRI Board members. 

  • A proven track record of strategic thinking and problem solving. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Finance, Business, Accounting or similar discipline. 

  • Eight to ten years of progressive leadership roles in finance with a non-profit agency. 

  • Certified Public Accountant designation. 

  • Experience working directly for or in partnership with NYS agencies. 

  • Experience with contracts involving Title IV-E funding.

Additional Information:

A valid NYS Driver’s license is required.
